The disc is a soft pulpy "shock absorber". It has a fibrous outer ring which holds in a jelly-like material. A "slipped disc" is a common way to refer to a wide variety of disc problems. However, a disc can't slip because of the way it attaches to the spinal bones above and below it. A disc can bulge. It can protrude. It can extrude/herniate. But it can't slip. Disc problems are best seen via an MRI scan. One who has a disc protrusion or extrusion can experience radiating pain, numbness/tingling and or weakness in the extremities. Chiropractic is a safe and conservative approach to caring for discs in the above mentioned conditions, however, in some instances a neurosurgical consult may be warranted.
